Causes dear to my heart

As I grow up, I find myself more and more concerned about issues that I used to totally overlook when I was younger. Of course I’m still learning every day, and while I’m a lot more active on certain subject, they are also plenty of causes that I’d like to be more involved in. I'd like to share all of that and to open a discussion with you, as to what we can all do together, to make this world just a little bit better for our children and grandchildren.

Protecting the environment.

This is probably the thing that I’m most passionate about. I’m a traveler, I love hiking, I’m an amateur photographer… I think this planet is way too beautiful to be wasted. And I also think that we’re killing ourselves when we forget to take care of our earth.

The great thing about this cause, is that there are many, many ways to act. You don’t necessarily have to give money to an organization (but you can if you want, and that is very helpful as well), being conscious of your actions on a daily basis can also make the biggest difference.

There is no small action when it comes to protecting the environment. Recycling, not taking your car, shutting the lights off each time you leave a room, not ever throwing anything in the nature (I’m seeing this on a daily basis and that makes me so sad); trying to reduce your trash as much as you can…

I do all those things, I also try to be conscious of where my fruits and vegetables are grown, whether they’re organic or not... I also try to initiate discussions about it with a lot of people, which I find the most interesting, and also the most helpful when it comes to learning new things about this.

What are the things you do for the environment? I’d love to learn more about your habits regarding this cause.

Breast Cancer Awareness

 (source : nerolisalonspa.com)

I’m quite sad to say that, but my family has a long history of women dying from breast cancer, and thank goodness, some of them survived as well. But still, it’s a very hard thing to go through, and I’ve been very sensitive to this cause since my grandmother had to start her battle (which she won) 13 years ago.

There are not a lot of thing that I can, myself, do about it. I’m not a scientist, I’m not a searcher, I don’t know much about this. What I can do, is donate to the people and organization that can do something about it.

What my mother and I like to do, is sign up for a run that promotes breast cancer awareness. We’ve done this a couple times, and it’s amazing, because you’re giving a little money for the cause, but you’re also gathering and taking part in an event, which means that people that might not be very aware of the issue, and what can be done about it.

Poverty and precarity

 (source : adeevee.com)

Unfortunately, poverty and precarity are so widely implemented in our societies that it’s become part of our daily lives to actually see people begging on the streets. I wish I could give a little something to all of them, but unfortunately, I’m not that rich.

One thing I do do, however, is going to Emmaüs each time I have something I want to buy or get rid of.

Emmaus is a French organization that helps people that are in a situation of poverty. They’ve created a community so that everyone has a role in it, and works in order to keep the organization standing.

The way it works, is that whenever you have things that you want to get rid of, whether it’s clothes, books, house stuff, computers, washing machines… Basically everything... You bring them to Emmaus, and there the people fix it in order to sell them later. So you also have a shop, where you can find, again, everything for the cheapest prices on the market, and it’s amazing because you’re helping an amazing cause, and buying things 10 times cheaper than in normal stores.

Abandoned Animals

 (source : unknown)

One very common phenomenon in France, and I guess in other countries as well, is to abandon your pet on a motorway rest area while you’re going on holiday, because it’s not going to be convenient to have your pet there with you. There are literally hundreds of pets that are found like that every year.

I do not personally have a pet, nor do I really want to adopt one (I’ve had a cat for the first 17 years of my life and it was just way too painful when she went away), but this is something that makes me very angry to think that people would do that.

I had an internship last year and decided to do it at La SPA, which is a French organization that basically picks up those abandoned pets (mostly dogs and cats) and takes care of them until people come in to adopt them. You can adopt animals at a very cheap price, and you’re, at the same time, helping this organization that saves hundreds of animals every year. One of my friends did adopt a dog like that, and it’s the sweetest dog you could ever meet.

Culture for all

 (source : unknown)

I’d like to finish this article by talking about a cause that I’m not very familiar with, but would like to get a lot more involved in in the future. That is the access to culture for everybody.

My cousin has worked in an organization that made possible any type of culture to even the most disadvantaged people, whether it was concerts, plays, museums, giving books, screening movies… and I found that to be such an amazing cause. I consider culture the most important part of education, and I find it somewhat outrageous that it is so expensive, and therefor destined to wealthier populations.

I don’t really know how to get involved in this, I’ll have to ask my cousin about this, but I do know that this is something I want to do. If you have any idea, please let me know.

I’d also like to know which causes are the dearest to your heart, and what you do on a daily (or maybe not so daily) basis to make this world a slighter better place. I hope we can inspire others, give some ideas to people who might be clueless about what’s possible at our scale, and start discussions that might lead to awakening, because we all have subjects we are very uneducated about.

I’d also like to include a link, for those of you who would like to get involved by giving time and money, I suggest you check Eventbrite’s nonprofit fundraising page for help in organizing a fundraiser!

Thank you so much for reading.
